Holyhead Golf Club is a members' golf club, in North Wales. The club was first formed in 1910.
The golf course associated with Holyhead Golf Club was first mentioned in a 1893 brochure, referencing the nine-hole Tre-Arddur Golf Club sited leeward of the Trearddur Bay Hotel, which financed its construction on land leased from the William family of Trecastell. The course itself was an asset for the hotel, attracting golfers and receiving local community support, with evidence of an established 'club' appearing in a 1910 Holyhead Chronicle report.
In December 1910, a pivotal meeting occurred at the Station Hotel, where discussions to create an 18-hole golf links led to the formation of a committee, the identification of a suitable site, and crucially, financial backing from the London & North Western Railway. The present site of Holyhead Golf Club Ltd was chosen, with the design and development heavily influenced by Commander G E Holland, the first Secretary of the new golf club.
Leased land acquisitions allowed the course to take shape; 86 acres from Lord Sheffield, 28 acres from Mr Hope Atkin, and an additional portion from Lord Boston combined to create the layout of the course. James Braid, a renowned course designer, was commissioned by the London & North Western Railway to direct the course design, marking his first visit to the site in 1911, with the first 14 holes opened for play by June 1912.
Subsequently, the course continued to develop over the following two years, resulting in a full 18-hole course as completed by Braid, merging the area's natural features with strategic golf architecture. Holyhead Golf Club, designed by James Braid in 1912, is recognized as a member of The Association of James Braid Courses, underlining Braid's legacy in golf course design which includes more than four hundred courses during his lifetime.
