About: Holywood Golf Club

Holywood Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Down. The club was first formed in 1904.

Holywood Golf Club was formed in 1904 with the first nine-hole course established on land known as The Irish Hill; the land was rented from Henry Harrison, who was elected the first president of the club. In 1917, ownership of the Harrison estate transferred to Grainger Brothers and in 1928 the golf club purchased the land.

The first captain of Holywood Golf Club was Mr H L Garrett, and by 1923, the club had reorganized into a limited company, acquiring additional land for £6,000 on the Belfast side of Nun's Walk to develop a full eighteen-hole course. A new clubhouse was also constructed on the original site of the present tee on Nun's Walk.

The clubhouse built on Nun's Walk was destroyed by fire in October 1945, leading the club to rent Artullagh House as interim clubhouse facilities. Post-World War II, the club sought new members by waiving the joining fee, only requiring the annual fee of 3 guineas.

In response to the growth of golf and demand for improved social amenities at Holywood, a new clubhouse was erected in 1962 at the location of the current clubhouse.
