Isle of Harris Golf Club

The Isle of Harris Golf Course was established in the 1930s, with evidence of play during the time of Lord Leverhulme in the 1920s. The course was closed with the onset of World War II and subsequently fell into disrepair, but it was revived and re-opened in 1985 by a group of less than a dozen individuals who formed an informal committee.

In 1986, the Isle of Harris Golf Club was formally re-constituted with 39 members, facilitated by the local crofting Grazings Committee in Scarista providing access to the land. After complex negotiations concluding in 2000, the club was purchased by its members, and the crofters were compensated with 350 acres of alternative land.

The golf course, located in Scarista on the west coast of Harris, is known for notably challenging elements, including the interference of sheep in play. It once had to be vacated during the lambing season in May but has since become a permanent fixture.

Nick Faldo, a famous golfer, played on the course in the early 1990s and left an autographed five-pound note in the honesty box, leading to the annual "Faldo Fiver" competition among club members. The club also had the opportunity to host the Ryder Cup for a photo event in September 2014, which was brought in by helicopter.
