About: Kilkenny Golf Club

Kilkenny Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Kilkenny. The club was first formed in 1896.

Kilkenny Golf Club was established on April 2nd, 1896 at Barrett's Hill by Mr E Smithwick, J.P., with the Kilkenny Journal confirming the occasion on April 4th, 1896. The club relocated several times, beginning at Barrett's Hill, then moving to Richview on Castlecomer Road in 1901, to Kilcreene in 1908, and ultimately to its current site in 1924.

The course was considerably improved in terms of layout and maintenance upon moving to Kilcreene, with Cecil Barcroft designing its bunkering. It became an 18-hole course in 1938, during Mr Richard Duggan's captaincy, following an extension of the grounds from 1936 to 1938.

In 1960, a new clubhouse was constructed, and along with this development, changes were made to the course layout; this revamped course opened before the clubhouse officially did in 1962. Further extensions and improvements were made to the clubhouse in the 1980s and 1990s, and the club purchased an additional 25 acres in 1994 to further improve and modernize the course.

International representation includes Gary Murphy and Paraic O'Rourke for Ireland, with Murphy turning professional in 1995. The club has also had several ladies senior internationals, such as Nancy Todd, Rita Walsh, and Eileen Rose Power, contributing to the club's history of skilled players.

The Smithwicks Scratch Cup, inaugurated in 1964, has been won by many prominent Irish amateur golfers including Joe Carr, Padraig Harrington, and other well-known figures. The club celebrated its centenary in 1996, marking a significant milestone, with events orchestrated by a dedicated committee chaired by Liam Reidy.

Summer rates are valid from 1st April to 31st October. Junior rates are €15.00 for 9 holes and €20.00 for 18 holes, Monday to Saturday.
