Kinross Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Perth & Kinross. The club was first formed in 1880.
Kinross Golf Course was initially established in the 1880s when local enthusiast Reverend Mr. David, and 23 other founding members, laid the groundwork for a golf course on land provided by Sir Basil Montgomery. The original design was a 6-hole course, created by Tom Morris, and the land, known as the Kirkgate alongside Loch Leven, was used for this purpose.
The club purchased essential maintenance equipment such as a lawnmower and roller for the upkeep of the course, with respect to which Mr. Duncan was the first recorded greenkeeper. The course operated seasonally, open from March to October, and Sundays were reserved, with playing tickets ranging from one to five shillings.
In 1910, the course expanded to a full 9-hole course thanks to land provided by Mr. Porteous of Turfhills, measuring 2,670 yards with a par of 34. However, this course was repurposed for agricultural use during the second world war, leaving the club without a home once again.
Post-war, the Kinross Golf Club leased what was known as 'Beeches Park', and over the next few decades, the course layout was modified but remained a 9-hole course until 1972. At this time, negotiations with Kinross Estates, under Sir David Montgomery, led to the development of an additional 9 holes, collectively known as 'the back nine'.
Simultaneously, another 18 holes were established on adjacent land, resulting in the split of the old and new courses to form two separate 18-hole courses. Initially named 'The Red' and 'The Blue', these were later renamed in 2007 to "The Bruce" and "The Montgomery".
The progression of facilities at Kinross Golf Course included an evolution from a simple hut to a clubhouse constructed around two large portacabins from the M90 motorway, with significant renovation and expansion taking place in 1990.
