Knighton Heath Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Dorset. The club was first formed in 1934.
Northbourne Golf Club was established on 31st May 1934, following the formation of a company on 1st February 1932 by Douglas Maxwell and Eric Waller, who aimed to found a golf club with a capital of £8,000. The course, an undulating 18-hole layout, was designed by Cecil Wren and was constructed by the end of March 1933 on land purchased from Lord Wimborne on Canford Heath, after the prior name 'Wallisdown (Bournemouth) Golf Club' was refused by the Board of Trade.
Despite facing a severe drought in the summer of 1934, the newly constructed course recovered by 1936, with membership expanding to 400. Notable features of the course include a 'quintuple' mower and a unique irrigation system introduced in 1947, whereas the professional course record of 66 was set by Cecil Wren, the designer and then-professional at the club, in 1938 with the equipment and quality of balls available at that time.
The course persevered through the financial crisis of the 1930s and the difficulties of World War II, adapting with measures such as reducing subscription fees and maintaining the course in good condition despite shortages. After the war, by December 1944, the club managed to pay off most debts and resumed regular activities with a reduced membership of 70 full-paying members, but a total membership of 280 including social members.
In the post-war period, Northbourne Golf Club saw multiple changes in professional staff and ownership, alongside financial challenges, until it was purchased by Bill Freeman in late 1949. Under new stewardship, the course continued to host significant golfing events, and despite further ownership changes, it was eventually acquired by club members and renamed Knighton Heath Golf Club in 1959 after Billy Knott's tenure as owner.
