About: Lamberhurst Golf Club

Lamberhurst Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Kent. The club was first formed in 1890.

The Lamberhurst Golf Course was established in the park of Court Lodge, owned by the Morland family, with its initial 9-hole course completed in September 1890. Prior to this, Henry Morland gained golf experience in Ceylon and after formal opening, the course became one of fewer than ten in Kent at the time.

Notable early members included poet Siegfried Sassoon, and the course experienced closure during both World Wars, utilized by the Army, with significant renovation efforts following each period. In the 1920s, the layout was redesigned to separate the holes more conventionally, and the first proper clubhouse was constructed in 1933.

Following WW2, professionals Ernie Southerden and his assistant John Jarvis restored the course, leading to a match where Ernie Southerden beat Ryder Cup player Sam King in 1947. The course's 9 holes became saturated by 1960, leading to the construction of a new clubhouse in 1968, and the acquisition of adjacent farmland in the 1970s allowed for further expansion.

Frank Pennink, a golf course architect, was contracted for the design of the new layout, resulting in an 18-hole course opened with an exhibition match on May 24, 1976. Lamberhurst Golf Course has since hosted annual Pro-Am tournaments, considered prominent in Kent.

Today, the course boasts 600 members and actively engages in county competitions and internal club events. Its features include the proximity to notable landmarks such as an old manor house and a Saxon church, and multiple holes offer challenges to skilled golfers.

The 18-hole course is set in parkland on either side of the River Teise with views of the Kent and Sussex countryside. It offers a variety of challenges, including water hazards and subtle terrain changes, and has been called "the Augusta of Kent."
