Leatherhead Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Surrey. The club was first formed in 1903.
The Leatherhead Golf Course was established in 1903 at Pachesham Manor, Surrey, on land owned by Mr F C Ramsey and Sir William Vincent. It was laid out by Peter Paxton, who was also a maker of golf clubs and balls, and involved in designing courses such as East Berkshire and Coventry.
The initial nine holes of the course opened in October of the same year, with Sydney Cooper serving as the club professional. Notably, Harry Cooper, Sydney's son born in Leatherhead and later inducted into the US PGA Hall of Fame, had close ties with the course.
In 1935, club professional Alf Perry won the Open Championship, and in the same year, the British Ryder Cup team practiced at Leatherhead before competing in New Jersey. The course sustained damage during the Second World War when the original clubhouse was bombed, and the area was repurposed for agricultural use and defense installations.
Changes to the course layout were necessitated in the 1970s due to the construction of the M25 London orbital motorway. A new clubhouse was built in 1984, along with extensive course modifications to restore its original yardage, led by Stuart Macmillan, a third-generation greenkeeper.
The golf course celebrated its centenary in 2003 with various events and improvements, such as upgrades on the back nine holes. Following a change in ownership in 2022, major investments were made into the course and clubhouse, including improved tees, fairways, greens, and drainage infrastructure.
While the golf course's rich heritage is emphasized, it continues to focus on development and enhancements to both its physical aspects and membership experience. It invites participation in shaping its future while paying homage to its storied past.
