Leckford Estate Golf Club

The Leckford Old Course was designed by Harry Shapland Colt and established in 1929, featuring a nine-hole layout constructed on land with flint subsoil favorable for drainage. The golf course is situated in the village of Leckford, within a valley lined with hardwoods and offers views from elevated points on the land.

During World War II, the course was repurposed for arable farming but was later restored for golf. In the late 1980s, the club expanded with the addition of the New Course, designed by Donald Steel, which was completed in 1989 and aimed to provide enjoyment rather than solely test professional skills.

Both courses were opened by the John Lewis Partnership and were originally intended for employees, known as "Partners," their spouses, and dependents, with some access extended to non-employees over time. The New Course was inaugurated with a foursome that included designer Donald Steel, and despite cold, windy weather, they enjoyed their initial experience on the course.

The history of Leckford Golf Club is deeply connected to the legacy of John Spedan Lewis who held a passion for nature and conservation, influencing the integration of the golf courses with the natural environment. The management of the courses reflects this ethos, contributing to the harmony between leisure and conservation efforts at the club.
