About: Leigh Golf Club

Leigh Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1906.

Leigh Golf Club was founded in 1906 when a group of 29 local businessmen purchased land and created a 9-hole course, using The Kenyon Junction Hotel as a temporary clubhouse. The course was initially made available to local residents interested in playing golf.

With membership growing to 192 by 1919, the club sought to expand, and by 1924 had acquired enough land to develop an 18-hole course thanks to local landowner Sir Edward Johnson-Ferguson. H.Hilton, a well-known amateur player, was commissioned to design the new holes, and the expanded course officially opened in May 1925.

By 1956, Leigh Golf Club had purchased the clubhouse and adjoining land from the Johnson-Ferguson family, financed by member-raised debentures. Over time, additional land was acquired, and the club currently owns all the land encompassing the course perimeter.

The historical clubhouse, Kenyon Hall, has served as the club's headquarters since 1924, with the original clubhouse having been inaugurated on June 19th, 1908. The club's continued existence is largely attributed to the original businessmen who established the course.
