About: Leyland Golf Club

Leyland Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1923.

Leyland Golf Club was established following a meeting at the Leyland Conservative Club in 1923, which led four local golfers to seek out a suitable location for a new course in Leyland. They eventually secured land on what was then Bob Haydock’s Farm, where the current course is situated, after negotiations with landowner James Haydock and the Worden Estates' agent William Forrester.

The inaugural AGM was held on March 5, 1924, with a membership count of 118 men and 57 women, and the course was laid out by Mr. Robertson from Preston Golf Club, with additional design inputs from renowned golf course architect Mr. J E Steed. Officially opened on August 2, 1924, the initial 9-hole layout, constructed partly on clay, faced drainage challenges and was extended over the decades to 18 holes, gaining a reputation as one of the best courses in Lancashire.

During the early years of the golf course, maintenance involved the use of a horse, and a former Army Mobile Workshop purchased in 1924 served as the clubhouse for 50 years. The club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1974 with a golf clinic and exhibition match featuring noted players Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas, by which time the course had undergone notable expansions and improvements.

The clubhouse at Leyland Golf Club has been reconstructed several times, with an initial phase in 1971 replaced by a modular construction in the 1970s, financed with an interest-free loan from Honorary Member Trevor Hemmings. After a fire in 2001 destroyed the clubhouse, the current facility was opened on September 21, 2002, by the Farington Family, the club's landlords since its inception.

Visitor green fees are £40 during the summer season and £30 during the winter season.
