Lisburn Golf Club

Lisburn Golf Club has a history that is slightly debated. A club existed in the town as early as 1880 but closed a few years later. The present club was founded in 1905 and played for many years on a nine hole course at Longstone Street. That original layout sat in the heart of the town and was known for its lime trees, some of which still stand today. As Lisburn expanded in the mid 20th century, the course became surrounded by housing, which led to the search for a new site.

The move to Blaris Lodge proved decisive. The club acquired 124 acres and opened the current course in 1973. It was designed by Fred Hawtree, and his original plan remains largely unchanged. The layout is traditional and well balanced, with two loops of nine holes returning to the clubhouse. Each loop includes a mix of par fives, par threes and par fours, giving the course a steady rhythm and variety.

The course is a parkland style layout, defined by mature trees, good drainage and subtle shaping rather than dramatic terrain. It rewards position and control more than power. Ongoing improvements, including tree planting and defined teeing areas, have strengthened the design without altering its character.

Notable facts include a course record of 64 by David Feherty and the club hosting several national and regional championships. Its location near major roads also makes it one of the more accessible courses in Northern Ireland.
