About: Llandudno Golf Club

Llandudno Golf Club is a members' golf club, in North Wales. The club was first formed in 1915.

Maesdu Golf Club, established in 1915 when the town council acquired the Maesdu Estate, was designed to serve the local community and draw visitors to the seaside resort of Llandudno. The layout of the course was advised by James Braid and further developed by Golf Professional Tom Jones into an 18-hole semi-parkland, semi-links course.

The original design of the golf course includes a busy road, now known as Deganwy Road, which separates the first two and final two holes from the remaining fourteen, a feature that dates back to when the road was merely a footpath in the early 1920s. Tom Jones remained influential in the club's history, introducing the September Open Meeting in 1922, which has evolved into a significant ten-day event, and became Welsh Chairman of the PGA, bringing the prestigious Penfold Tournament to Maesdu.

In 1951, Maesdu was instrumental in the formation of the Golf Foundation, starting with Junior golf lessons that inspired the organization's focus on youth golf engagement. The club established the country's first Junior section in 1962, complete with its own Junior Committee, and in 1964 the current clubhouse was opened, providing extensive facilities and views of the North Wales coastline.

The Professional Golfers' Association recognized Maesdu's contributions to golf by planting one of 100 oak trees to commemorate its Centenary Year in 2001, honoring clubs with historical ties to the PGA. In 2013, Maesdu Golf Club was the venue for the Ladies Golf Union Seniors' Home Internationals and was selected by the Golf Union of Wales to host the Welsh Open Youths Championship in 2015.

The Llandudno Trophy, a significant award first presented in 1938, has historical ties with Maesdu Golf Club and the PGA, including a dent from damage sustained during the Second World War. This trophy has since been associated with the biennial PGA Cup matches between teams of club professionals from GB, Ireland, and the USA.
