About: Lochmaben Golf Club

Lochmaben Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Dumfries & Galloway. The club was first formed in 1926.

Lochmaben Golf Club's course was established in 1926 with the original 9 holes designed by James Braid, a five times Open Champion. The course is located amidst three archaeological sites of historic significance, and a notable feature includes its proximity to the Gallows Hill across from the fourth tee.

The second green is situated at the site of one of Robert the Bruce's castles, predating Bruce's ownership, with visible remains of the mottes. Another historic point of interest on the course is the Mount Pleasant settlement, found on the ninth hole alongside Skelvieland enclosures.

Sheep once grazed freely on the course, a practice that continued until 1956 when the greens were finally fenced to prevent their access. The course and club faced a significant challenge during World War II when the Royal Engineers occupied the ground, halting golf activities for five years.

After a five-year hiatus, the golf course reopened in July 1947, although financial challenges almost forced its closure by December of the same year, which was averted through successful fundraising efforts. A new clubhouse opened in January 1955, later supplemented with two major additions.

The course realized its expansion from 9 to 18 holes in the early 1990s after land from the Broadchapel Estate was acquired, and it officially opened in its current form in 1995. In response to the growing popularity of golf, further land was purchased in 2003, leading to the creation of two new holes and extending the course to nearly 6,000 yards with a Standard Scratch Score (SSS) of 70.

The Lochmaben golf course has tangible links to Robert the Bruce's history, evidenced by the remains of early castle structures influencing the layout of the initial holes. The local motto "From us is born the liberator king" (E NOBIS LIBERATOR REX) signifies Lochmaben's connection to the Bruce legacy.
