Longcliffe Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Leicestershire & Rutland. The club was first formed in 1905.
The Longcliffe Golf Course was established in 1905 on the Garendon Estate at Longcliffe, with Mr. Tom Williamson as the course architect. His brother, Hugh Williamson, was appointed as the club professional to prepare the first nine holes, which were ready by Easter 1906.
By early 1907, the course featured eighteen holes and the clubhouse was complete. Membership increased to 150, and the inaugural stroke play competitions were held, with the Falcon Cup for men and the Chapman Cup for ladies.
In 1937, alterations to the clubhouse and changes to the surrounding environment were made, including the construction of a new drive and the removal of trees in front of the clubhouse. The course gained renown through the exhibition matches of professional golfers such as Dai Rees and Guy Wolstenholme in 1955.
The course ownership was transferred from the De Lisle Estate to The Longcliffe Golf Club Company in 1959, a move orchestrated by Mr. Charles W. (Bill) Hall. Following this, professional golfers like Bobby Locke and Max Faulkner showcased their skills in an exhibition four-ball in 1960.
Notable events include the return of Dai Rees in 1970 for a charity match with other professional golfers, and the commencement of a major clubhouse reconstruction in September 1973. In 1986, the new 15th hole was introduced, which is now considered the signature hole of the course.
Subsequent enhancements include the opening of a new Pro shop in 1993 and the completion of new green keepers' facilities in 1999, which coincided with another clubhouse renovation. The reconstructed 1st green was introduced in June 2000.
The golf course celebrated its centenary in 2006. Since then, the clubhouse and patio areas have seen improvements, and despite the largely consistent course layout, the presentation and conditions have been refined.
