Ludlow Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Shropshire. The club was first formed in 1889.
The original golf course of the Ludlow Golf Club was known as "The Old Field", located in the parish of Bromfield. It was established in 1889 with 9 holes amidst wild terrain and flora, home to various forms of wildlife and historical sepulchral burial mounds dating from 2000 to 700 BC. The course, encompassing "The Old Field," continues to preserve these ecological and historical features, including the ancient burial mounds located near certain greens and fairways.
Viscount Windsor, as the first President and land owner, played a key role in the founding of the Ludlow Golf Club, with the early membership comprising primarily the County and Professional classes. Women and juniors participated in the earliest competitions recorded, and in 1911, membership was extended to the public, signaling a commitment to inclusivity that the club maintains to this day.
Expansion of the course to 18 holes occurred in 1923, under the direction of the club's professional, and in 1927, five-time Open Champion and renowned course architect James Braid made significant modifications, including the addition of 45 bunkers, which have endured with minimal changes until 1996. In 1940, an exhibition match with Henry Cotton raised funds for the British Red Cross, fostering a tradition of philanthropy that persists with the annual Armistice Cup.
Before acquiring its own Clubhouse, the golf club utilized accommodations provided by the Race Club until 1912, when the first clubhouse was constructed on site with basic facilities. Over the years, the clubhouse underwent various extensions and renovations, finally being replaced in 1983 by a modern structure that was further extended in 1998.
The centenary of the golf club was celebrated with a series of Open Golf Events, a match against Minchinhampton Golf Club, a display by The Red Devils parachute team, and a centenary dinner featuring the late Sir Michael Bonallack, OBE. In 1996, a course redevelopment removed holes crossing the now-busy B4365, representing the most significant change since Braid's 1927 redesign.
