Matlock Golf Club

Matlock Golf Club was established in 1906, after the town of Matlock's hydro managers sought additional diversions for their guests and pushed for the creation of a golf course. The course is situated 850 feet above sea level, designed by Tom Williamson, and presents an 18-hole, par 70 challenge on undulating moorland with the Bentley Brook adding to its difficulty.

The official opening of the Matlock Golf Course was celebrated with a match involving renowned players such as Harry Vardon and Sandy Herd, and the course has retained much of its original layout. Notable features include the stone walls that were part of the original course, and the Cuckoostone, which serves as a distinctive club logo and is a historical monolith in the region.

In the decades following its inception, the club aimed to continuously improve the course and acquired the land it sat on, ensuring full ownership by the 1960s. Through significant investments in greens maintenance technology and external agronomic expertise, the club has sought to enhance the playing quality to meet modern standards.

Marking its centenary in 2006, the club celebrated with a week of events and the publication of a history book written by Barry Kay. As a testament to its adaptive approach, the club opened a new covered and floodlit driving range in September 2013, illustrating its ongoing commitment to providing an excellent golfing experience.
