Mcdonald Golf Club

The McDonald Ellon Golf Club in Aberdeenshire, established in 1927, encompasses an 18-hole parkland golf course that was originally designed by Stewart Burns. It is situated 16 miles north of Aberdeen and was initially a nine-hole course that expanded to a full 18 holes by the mid-1970s, with a modern clubhouse built in the mid-1990s.

Named after Sir James McDonald, who donated the land for the golf course to the people of Ellon in 1926, the course features stately trees and rhododendron bushes as natural obstacles. The original nine holes are characterised by a natural stream which is incorporated into almost every hole, presenting a specific challenge to golfers.

Miss Catherine Scott officially opened the McDonald Ellon Golf Course on June 1, 1927, despite inclement weather. The course and park were later gifted in perpetuity to the people of Ellon by Sir James McDonald, placing them under the town council's trusteeship.

The design of the original course has largely stood the test of time, with the back nine remaining challenging and largely unchanged from Burns' original layout. Sir James McDonald played a significant role in the course's development and management throughout his life, influencing key decisions regarding the course's maintenance and structure.
