Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club

The golf course was established in 1882 by Dr. Clark, a Scottish medical practitioner who had moved to Minehead. The original 9-hole course, which was later expanded to 18 holes in 1901, was designed by Royal North Devon professional, Johnny Allen, on the land bordering the shore of the Bristol Channel between Minehead and Dunster.

The inaugural meeting to propose the formation of the club took place at the old Plume of Feathers, situating the course among the first in England with only 20 other clubs existing at the time, one being in Bath. As the course in Bath was subsequently relocated, the course at Minehead is recognized as the oldest in Somerset and was initially laid out on part of the Luttrell family estate at a cost of seven shillings and ten pence per year.

Notable developments include the first clubhouse which started as a converted cottage located at the original first tee and is now used as a trolley store. A.J. Hobley, the course's first professional, constructed a house by the 18th Green which was eventually expanded into the present clubhouse.

Despite having telephone service as early as 1905, the clubhouse did not have electricity until 1959. Over its history, the close proximity to the sea has necessitated various modifications to the clubhouse and the course to counteract coastal erosion.
