Monmouthshire Golf Club

Monmouth Golf Club was established in 1896 and initially played on the grounds of Priory Farm. However, the location proved unsuitable and the club moved to Vauxhall Fields, taking over the Vauxhall Golf Club and its course. In 1903, the club relocated to the Hendre Estate and then again in 1905 to Troy Farm. The club faced challenges with low membership due to difficulty in maintaining the course during the summer months. A court case in 1910 led to a High Court ruling in favor of the club, defining a fairway. The course closed in 1912 but was eventually reopened in 1920 at Dixton on part of the present course. The first professional, George Waldron, laid out a nine-hole course in 1921. In 1992, additional land was rented, creating a full eighteen-hole course that opened later that year. The club continued to make improvements, including drainage and the construction of buggy paths.

In 2008, the club purchased the previously rented area, making the entire 18-hole course owned by the members.

The course itself has been shaped by glacial action, with evidence of erosive forces visible from the second green and seventh fairway. The resulting terrain includes fertile and well-draining sands and gravels that contribute to the course's variety and shape.

Surrounding the course are notable landmarks, including the Blorenge Mountain and the Mynydd Pen-y-Fal, commonly referred to as Sugar Loaf for its resemblance to traditional sugar cones. The Skirrid Fawr mountain to the northeast further enriches the course's location with both historical and geological significance.

Historical aspects of the site include its connection to the 12th century, with the clubhouse built near the location of the former Beilu Du mansion, a significant county house linked to the story of Gwarun Ap Caradwg. The initial medieval house is thought to have been positioned strategically across from the Blorenge Mountain.

The course's location, underscored by its geological and historical context, provides a distinctive playing experience where golf intersects with the deep-rooted history of the region.

Summer green fees are valid from April 1, 2025 to October 31, 2025. A twilight rate is available after 4pm.
