About: Newcastle West Golf Club

Newcastle West Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Limerick. The club was first formed in 1938.

Newcastle West Golf Club was conceived on 14th April 1938 by eight local businessmen in Egan’s Central Hotel. The venture began with a land lease at Killeline, and Mr. D. Murray from Tipperary was appointed to lead lessons and supervise course development. The club opened officially on 14th September 1938 with a memorable first drive by the V. Rev. Canon Hannon.

During World War II, the club faced the rationing of golf balls and joined the Golfing Union of Ireland on 23rd March 1942. In 1992, a decision to move to Rathgonan was made to create an 18-hole Championship course, which has since become a must-play parkland course in the South West.

Significant investments have been made in the course, facilities, and the clubhouse, ensuring high standards for members and visitors alike. With the new course opening in May 1994, the club has continuously improved and expanded its offerings.

Marking its history, the club launched a 75th Anniversary Journal in 2013, documenting its evolution from its humble beginnings to becoming a premier golfing destination.
