Ormskirk Golf Club

Ormskirk Golf Club was established in 1899 by a group of local businessmen and opened with a 9-hole course laid out on land that was once part of the Royal Deer Park at Lathom Park. The topography of the site was characterized by sandy soil and an abundance of high-quality turf.

Harold Hilton designed the 18-hole course which officially opened in 1903, marking a significant evolution of the original layout. Over the years, the course has undergone at least two major reconstructions since its establishment.

A unique feature mentioned is a crescent-shaped hollow near the 16th hole, which is believed to have been an emplacement for Cromwell's forces during the attack on Lathom House in 1644. Historical events have also left their mark on the course, including its use for grazing cattle and growing vegetables during World War I and being a target of Luftwaffe bombs in 1940 after a raid on Liverpool.

The golf course has historical connections to local military efforts, as reflected in its trophies named after the Remount Depot at Lathom Park and the RAOC depot. These links with wartime history are commemorated through various competitions and trophies still present at the club.
