Oughterard Golf Club

The golf course now known as Oughterard Championship Golf Club was originally part of a 140-acre estate sold for development in 1969. The initial investors for the golf course included Martin Faherty, Paddy Higgins, Sheila Egan, Annie Egan, Lily Willis, Bobby Deacy, Frank Kyne, and later Tom St. John Barry; the company was incorporated on 3rd July 1969 as Gortreevagh Golf Course Ltd.

Golf course development, designed by the golf architect John Harris, began in 1970 despite some local opposition to the use of farmland for the course. Construction involved manual labor with basic tools until a tractor was hired in July 1971 to assist the workers, and the club's first professional, Gus Murphy, was appointed in the early years of development.

In 1982, the club's governance changed to member ownership and control, leading to significant redevelopment including the transformation of Willis farm buildings into a clubhouse. Major financial contributions and labor from members allowed expansion without additional borrowing, adding a new nine holes and drawing £140,000 from car draws.

Further developments took place in 1998/1999, with an investment of €1.8 million for a new clubhouse, and 18 new sand-based greens and tees designed by Patrick Merrigan. This resulted in significant improvements to the course's facilities and playing experience.

Green fees vary depending on the season. High season (April - September) rates are €80 on weekdays and weekends. March and October rates are €60 on weekdays and weekends. November to February rates are €25 on weekdays and weekends.

Open days take place every Tuesday April - October, costs are €5 for members and €35 for non-members. Society rates start from €35 midweek and €40 on Saturdays. Contact the Admin Office or Pro Shop for society bookings.
