About: Pannal Golf Club

Pannal Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Yorkshire. The club was first formed in 1906.

The golf course was established on September 8, 1906, and was initially a nine-hole course with plans for expansion to eighteen holes on land leased from the 5th Earl of Harewood. The first captain, Mr. F. Barber, inaugurated the course, and by April 11, 1908, the full course opened with a high-profile match between James Braid and Harry Vardon.

Sandy Herd, an Open Championship winner, was retained for the course's design, while later, in 1912-1913, Dr. Alister MacKenzie was engaged to implement improvements including remodeled bunkers and new features. MacKenzie's involvement was confirmed through historical records in 2011, cementing the course's architectural pedigree.

The course played an auxiliary role during World War I, hosting the Pannal Unit of the Ripon Division of Training Corps and undergoing hardship as members enlisted and casualties affected the club. While World War II brought challenges such as the course being grazed by sheep and used for agriculture, competitive golf, including a notable match featuring Henry Cotton, continued in a limited capacity.

Post-war years witnessed significant events, such as the Ryder Cup selection of Jack Busson as the club's professional and course modifications by Sir Guy Campbell and Major C.A. MacKenzie. The purchase of the course from the 7th Earl of Harewood in 1950 marked a pivotal moment in the club’s history.

Notable exhibition matches featured champions like Lee Trevino, fostering excitement and elevating the course's profile. The course also took progressive steps in the late 20th century, including the enfranchisement of female members in 1999 and hosting regional qualifying rounds for The Open Championship from 2006.

In the 21st century, Pannal Golf Club has seen further developments with a renovated clubhouse in 2015, introduction of new facilities such as a Halfway House, and course improvements including a Tree Management Programme and drainage enhancements. The club continued adapting policies to comply with the Equality Act, electing both a Men's Captain and Ladies’ Captain annually.

Visitor tee times can be booked online. Current green fees are £65 on weekdays and £75 on weekends.
