Prestbury Golf Club

Prestbury and Upton Golf Club was established in 1920, following a meeting held by local golf enthusiasts in Stanley Hall. A contract to design and lay out the course was awarded to Frank Harris & Company on the advice of Harry S. Colt, with nine holes becoming ready for play by March 1921.

Designed by renowned architect Harry Colt, in collaboration with Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the 18-hole course was fully opened in 1924. The design is recognized for its use of the undulating terrain to incorporate dramatic changes in elevation and a routing that maximizes the land's natural contours, providing well-draining sandy subsoil that keeps the course playable in wet conditions.

The course captures significant architectural interest by having the back nine wrapped around the front in a horseshoe configuration. Prestbury's playing grounds, covering around 90 acres, highlight Colt's skill in creating engaging layouts on comparatively limited space without the need for extensive walking between greens and tees.

After continued guidance from Colt through the mid-1930s, John Morrison succeeded him, followed by the Hawtree Company and later by Mackenzie & Ebert up until 2016. The course has been noted for its strategic design and has hosted several county and national tournaments, including the English Seniors Championship and Open Championship Regional Qualifying.
