Purley Downs Golf Club

Purley Downs Golf Course was established in the early 1890s when local golf enthusiasts convinced a tenant farmer to allow golf among his sheep, leading to the creation of a nine-hole course and the establishment of Purley Downs Golf Club in 1894. A wooden clubhouse was constructed by what is now the 7th green.

In 1903-1904, the golf course was redesigned by JH Taylor, a five-time Open champion, into an eighteen-hole course; at that time, a substantial clubhouse, which largely remains today, was built. The original course layout has undergone changes, including the removal of holes across a railway line and the acquisition of new land in the 1920s for current holes 3 to 7.

Notable golfers, including Open champions Harry Vardon, James Braid, and Henry Cotton, have played exhibitions at Purley Downs Golf Course. The club, now owned by members following land purchase in the 1950s, commemorated its centenary in 1994 with events including a Pro-Am Tournament won by Richard Boxall.

Recently, investments have been made in the club's infrastructure, including the installation of a borehole for irrigation, and improvements to bunkering and greens. These greens are now renowned for being both true and fast, with speeds comparable to professional tour levels.

Visitor green fees are £70.00 Monday-Friday. Twilight rates (after 1:30 PM) are £45.00 Monday-Thursday. County Card holders can play for £45.00 per round Monday - Thursday.
