About: Reddish Vale Golf Club

Reddish Vale Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Cheshire. The club was first formed in 1912.

Reddish Vale Golf Club was established in April 1912 after Frank William Reed and JW Dudley were inspired by the vale's potential for a golf course. The manor house known as South Cliffe was purchased, and over 100 acres of land were leased to create the course under the guidance of the esteemed golf course architect, Dr. Alister MacKenzie, who was also the Captain of Alwoodley Golf Club in Leeds at the time.

MacKenzie, known for his strategic design philosophy, contributed to Reddish Vale providng an environment that balanced risk and reward, requiring thoughtful shot placement. The course, largely unchanged after a century, except for the 16th hole that was extended from a par 3 to a par 4 in the 1930s, offers a challenge that respects the natural contours and variety of the terrain.

Sir Henry Cotton, a three-time Open Championship winner, praised the 16th hole at Reddish Vale after playing a 36-hole exhibition match in 1940, leading it to be renamed 'Cotton's'. The course has also been honored by the professional tenure of Open Champion Alf Perry from 1946 until 1949, following his unexpected victory at the 1935 Open Championship.

In recent years, Reddish Vale Golf Club has continued to be a venue for significant golfing events, including the Cheshire Seniors Championship and The Balfour Cup. With a vibrant history, the course currently accommodates golfers of all skill levels and has seen homegrown talent like Barry Barker and Adam Stott represent the club at high levels of competition.

Designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the golf course at Reddish Vale is notable for its interesting layout and challenging holes, recognized by leading course architects and ranked among the top courses in Cheshire. The course, despite being within an urban area near Manchester, offers a secluded golfing experience, surrounded by the M60 motorway and rich in local ecology and geography, as intended by MacKenzie.

The course record at Reddish Vale was set by Adam Stott on 23rd August 2017 with a score of 61, showcasing an impressive level of play that earned him one of the lowest handicaps in the country at the time. The excellence of the course design and its continued appeal is further underscored by its ranking in the top 200 courses in England by Today's Golfer Magazine.
