Retford Golf Club

Retford Golf Course was established in 1920 when Colonel Sir Albert Whitaker Bart., CBE, leased 38 acres of land for the creation of the first six holes, which were designed by Tom Williamson. As a prominent designer with more than 60 layouts in the UK, Williamson's work on the Retford course was significant in the golfing community.

The early membership comprised 100 Gents and 67 Ladies, indicative of a progressive approach to inclusivity within the sport during that era. By 1958, two additional holes were introduced, marking the completion of the first nine holes, with plans to expand to 18 holes being proposed in the 1970s but only materializing when the remaining nine holes were inaugurated in 1990 by Major Sir J. Whitaker Bart.

Retford Golf Course witnessed historical moments including an event in 1924 attended by the then Open Champion Mr. Arthur Havers and a notable win in the Nottinghamshire Ladies Championship by a club member Miss K. Watson in 1928. Post-World War II, the club strategically raised funds through shares, bought additional land, and maintained its status as a private members' club, evading an earlier proposal to become a municipal course.

The club experienced significant growth and by 1991 boasted a record membership, which provided the necessary impetus to further develop the course's offerings. In 2001, a new clubhouse was opened, cementing Retford's place in the region as a well-facilitated golf destination and was unveiled by Mr. Bob Wilson of Arsenal F.C. and Scotland.

Green fees vary based on the time of year. Weekend green fees are slightly higher than weekday fees. Junior green fees are available.
