Robin Hood Golf Club

Robin Hood Golf Club, established in 1893, is one of the oldest clubs in the West Midlands and was a founding member of the Worcestershire County Union of Golf Clubs. The club was originally founded by golf enthusiasts who leased 44 acres of land for an annual rent of £5 and laid out a basic 9-hole course.

The first president was Mr. Playfair, reflecting golf's tradition of self-regulation, while founding member Dr. Frank Stableford is notable for inventing the Stableford scoring system. The original 9-hole course was marked out by Dr. Stableford himself on the pony track at Hall Green and the layout endured for 20 years until his departure in 1899.

In 1913, the club moved to a new 97-acre site, and in 1914 they opened an 18-hole course designed by Mr. H S Colt, alongside a new clubhouse. Despite the impact of World War I on membership and staffing, the club members' dedication ensured its proper maintenance and the club's subsequent prosperity in the 1920s.

After years of lease negotiations, the freehold purchase of the course was finally completed for £12,500 in 1953, with President Cliff Toogood contributing a significant personal donation. By 1966, a new clubhouse and updated course layout were established, entirely financed by the sale of a portion of the course's land.

Despite periodic discussions of relocation, in 1972 and again at the century's turn, members voted to remain at the existing site. Sale of redundant land financed improvements to the clubhouse and, in 2010, Andy Wood was appointed as Course Manager, initiating a greens recovery program and other course enhancements without the need to re-lay every green.
