About: Ross-on-Wye Golf Club

Ross-on-Wye Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Gloucestershire. The club was first formed in 1903.

The Ross Golf Club was formed in 1903, after Major W.S.R. Cox and his brother, Captain J.A. Cox, began organizing golf matches on The Old Racecourse at Weir End, with 80 initial members. The club originally used a course at Alton Court for 22 years, which had unique challenges including crossing a railway line and a local rifle range.

In 1925, the Club moved to Rudhall to lease land for a nine-hole course, laid out by the late J.H. Taylor, a notable Open Champion. By 1957, discussions for a new 18-hole course were underway, leading to the acquisition of land at Jays Green in 1961, with C.K.Cotton, a renowned golf architect, providing several alternative layouts despite woodland development challenges.

The first nine holes at the new location were opened in 1964 by Club President Col. J. F. Maclean, with the clubhouse being constructed and officially opened in June 1965. The full 18-hole course, offering 6,451 yards with tree-lined fairways that require accuracy, was officially inaugurated on 7th May 1967 by Mr J. J. E. Pennick, President of the English Golf Union.
