About: Royal Birkdale Golf Club

Royal Birkdale Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1889.

The Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, United Kingdom, was designed by George Lowe in 1897 and then modified by F.G. Hawtree and J.H. Taylor in the 1920s. It’s an esteemed course known for a strong back nine and has served as a venue for The Open Championship due to its challenging layout.

The course is characterized by relatively flat fairways surrounded by dunes, and greens that are perceived to require less local knowledge for putting. Notable holes include the stoutly bunkered and iconic 12th hole, and the 18th hole, which serves as an easier par five or a tough par four during The Open.

Royal Birkdale Golf Club has a rich history, having hosted numerous major tournaments including The Open Championship and Ryder Cups. It is considered the preferred course on the open rota amongst tour pros, particularly Americans, because the course is allows a more "target golf" style than most traditional links.

Visitors are welcome to Royal Birkdale.

Green fees are £325 per person.

All tee times must be booked in advance.
