Royal Wimbledon Golf Club

Royal Wimbledon traces its roots to 1865 and London Scottish Rifle Volunteers on Wimbledon Common. Anthony Wolfe, the club's archivist, joined the Cookie Jar Golf Podcast (Ep. 310, Aug 2024) to explain how the club evolved into three distinct courses and how its architecture came from some of the game's finest designers.

The club has occupied several sites. The original London Scottish nine on the common was extended to eighteen; Willie Park Junior later remodelled that course. In 1908 the club acquired Warren Farm, where Harry Colt laid out eighteen holes and Colt and MacKenzie developed the clubhouse area. Laidlaw Purves, a founding father of English golf, served as professional and captain—adding another link to the golden age of golf design.

Wolfe described the common course as "the Iron Room from the common"—referring to the iconic clubhouse space and its place in club lore. He noted the mix of Park, Purves, Colt and MacKenzie influence, creating a rare blend of Victorian and Edwardian design across the club's multiple layouts. Today Royal Wimbledon offers a rare heathland experience within Greater London and a tangible connection to the pioneers of British golf architecture.
