About: Royston Golf Club

Royston Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Hertfordshire. The club was first formed in 1869.

The golf course at Royston Golf Club has historical roots dating back to the early 17th century, with records of George Villers, 1st Earl of Buckingham, playing golf on Therfield Heath in 1624. The formal establishment of the golf course occurred in 1869 when two Cambridge undergraduates, Andrew Murray and George Gosset, designed an 18-hole course, potentially the oldest outside of Scotland.

The course, however, was short-lived, lasting only two years due to the travel distance for players. It was re-established in 1890 with involvement from the local community and Cambridge University Golf Club and officially opened as Royston Golf Club on May 1st, 1892. The club's first professional in 1893 was notable golfer Andrew Kirkaldy, who later contributed significantly to professional golf both in the USA and for the R&A after World War I.

Royston Golf Club's course has evolved over the years, with changes made to extend its length and redirect play away from nearby roads while preserving its essential character. The combined history and modifications allow players to experience a well-preserved golfing heritage spanning over 125 years.

In 1907, Royston Ladies Golf Club was founded with a separate clubhouse, eventually amalgamating with Royston Golf Club in 1956. The course itself is situated on naturally draining heathland with a unique links feel, showcasing a diverse layout that includes two par threes over 220 yards and several driveable par fours, set against the backdrop of Royston's historical landscapes.

Green fees are available for visitors. Weekend visitor rates apply from 12:00 on Saturdays and from 10:30 on Sundays. A twilight rate of £25 is available after 2 PM Monday through Sunday.
