Saltburn By The Sea Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Yorkshire. The club was first formed in 1894.
Saltburn-by-the-Sea Golf Club was established with a meeting at the Zetland Hotel on July 19th, 1894, and had its first 9-hole course at West Cliff, based on part of Windy Hill Farm near an area locally known as Agars Gap. Due to coastal erosion, no traces of the original Club House, tees, and greens survive, while the club became a Limited Company in 1896 with the course relocated to Hob Hill around the same time.
The golf course, initially comprising 9 holes, faced a stagnation period during World War I, after which it was expanded to 18 holes and officially played as such on June 17th, 1922, with the McBain Cup, the oldest trophy of the club, being competed for. The 18-hole expansion, influenced by James Braid's report, was completed by 1924, and throughout the years, has seen development and changes, including alterations during World War II when land was repurposed for agriculture and a bomb created a visible crater on the 9th fairway.
During the 1950s and 1960s, personalities like Harold Kemball and Brian Waites, who later became a prominent professional golfer, were associated with Saltburn Golf Club, with Waites returning in 1989 to open the new clubhouse. Post-World War II development saw considerable investment in the course and facilities, which included a replacement of the wooden clubhouse after it suffered fire damage in the 1980s.
From 1945 to 2017, Saltburn Golf Club has benefited from stable leadership with only 12 Presidents, fostering consistent development and improvements to both the course and clubhouse. For a detailed account of the golf club's first 100 years, there is a special book produced for the centenary, available through the club secretary.
