Seaford Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Sussex. The club was first formed in 1887.
Established in 1887, Seaford Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Sussex and was initially a 12-hole course at Seaford Head before expanding to 18 holes in 1889. A relocation occurred in 1907 due to an expanding membership and the need for a new clubhouse, moving the club to Bullock Down, East Blatchington.
The course was designed by J H Taylor, a five-time Open winner and noted golf architect, who utilized the natural undulations of the landscape, including old dew ponds and flint quarries in his design. Taylor's original 5,814 yard layout had a bogey of 81, which saw its only major revision in 1911 with the creation of the current 7th and the combination of the former 16th and 17th holes to create what is now considered the finest hole on the course.
Over the years, further revisions have been applied to the course, such as bunker, green, and tee modifications; notably, in 1930 the 1st hole was extended to create a right dog-leg. Today, the course measures 6,546 yards off the back tees with a par of 69 and a Standard Scratch Score (SSS) of 71.
Two new holes, 17a and 18a, have been introduced, allowing for shorter competitive rounds that don’t disrupt the flow of the game. Seaford has also undergone financial challenges; post-WW2, it experienced a period of financial decline until Miss Alida Dormer (later Mrs Alida Snow) stepped in to purchase and lease back the freehold in 1955, also funding improvements and managing the club.
The club regained the freehold in 1968 at a favorable price from Mrs. Snow, leading to further enhancements, including clubhouse extensions and practice facilities such as a driving range and a par 3 academy course. Seaford Golf Club's comprehensive centenary history was documented by John Walsh OBE in 1986, accessible in the General Manager's office.
