Shrewsbury Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Shropshire. The club was first formed in 1891.
Shrewsbury Golf Club's first course was established at Hencote, north of the town, with Wyndham Deedes, a local headmaster, serving as the founding father. The initial membership at Hencote counted 46, but upon moving to new grounds at Meole Brace in 1892, the club enlisted Bill Lewis to lay out a nine-hole course.
By 1920, the course at Meole Brace was expanded to 18 holes, and membership increased to 375, concurrently establishing a strong connection with Shrewsbury School and initiating the annual Prior Cup match. Notable golfers from the Club's history include Guy Darlington and Cyril Fairchild, who achieved success in various championship events.
After World War II, the course was redesigned by C K Cotton, and the late 1960s saw the club relocate to Grange Farm at Condover, due to the construction of a new bypass, with the new course opening in 1972. This location has since seen significant developments including thousands of trees planted and the addition of three water hazards.
The Clubhouse has also been redeveloped and expanded to accommodate larger functions, with a marquee added. The club has historical associations with Largs Golf Club and has produced several outstanding amateur golfers, as well as professional Scott Drummond, winner of the PGA trophy in 2004.
Shrewsbury Golf Club is described as a mature parkland course, characterized by tree-lined fairways and fast greens with subtle contours that offer a challenge to accomplished golfers. The course, measuring 6,207 yards from the white tees with a par of 70 for men, and 5,586 yards from the red tees with a par of 73 for ladies, provides a fair and enjoyable test for golfers of all skill levels.
The course's design includes both flat, lush fairways on the front nine, and undulating holes on the back nine with views of the surrounding hills, offering variety in play. Enhanced by its superb drainage system, the course allows for year-round golf without the need for temporary greens.
Visitors are welcome at Shrewsbury Golf Club. Weekday green fees are £60.00 and weekend green fees are £66.00. Members' guests can play for £30.00 on weekdays and £33.00 on weekends.
County card holders can play midweek for £30.00. Junior rates are £30.00 on weekdays and £33.00 on weekends.
