Silkstone Golf Club

Silkstone Golf Club was initially established in 1893 when the game of golf was introduced to Barnsley at Dayhouse Farm, located on Huddersfield Road, which was later known as Mounts Farm. The need for better facilities led to the renting of land at Silkstone, where an eighteen hole course was designed by H Fulford of Moortown Golf Club, Leeds, with a length of 5,330 yards.

Significant developments in the club's history include the constitution of the Barnsley and District Golf Club in 1905 and the opening of a nine hole course at Field Head in May 1905, which cost £600. The construction of the second set of nine holes was delayed due to World War I, but were completed and opened in 1917.

Further changes occurred when part of the course was used for opencast mining in 1943, yielding 100,000 tons of coal; following this, the course was fully restored by 1956. In 1968, the club purchased the leased land for £10,000, resulting in the club being renamed to Silkstone Golf Club.

The original clubhouse dating back to 1927, which was donated by Ald R J Soper, still forms part of the current premises with numerous extensions and improvements made over the years. In 2008, significant development took place with the addition of seven new holes and the acquisition of an additional forty-four acres of land, which formed part of a £750,000 investment.
