South Moor Golf Club

South Moor Golf Club was officially opened on April 26, 1924, by Major Sir Clive Morrison-Bell, with the course initially comprising only three holes before expanding to an 18-hole layout. The development included a full-sized course stretching nearly 5,000 yards, with strategic contributions from the acclaimed architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie, which began after his visit to the club in 1925.

The course is known for its heathland terrain, a rarity in the North of England, and features a layout that weaves through gorse, heather, and birch. Notable challenges include the imposing gorse bushes and large, undulating greens that are a hallmark of Dr. MacKenzie’s design, demanding precision and a refined touch from golfers.

The golf course is steeped in mining heritage, with its early committee roles filled by colliery officials and a strong connection to the local coalmining community. Following World War Two, the course underwent significant changes and was renamed, eventually becoming accessible to non-colliery employees with full voting rights only in the mid-1980s.

South Moor Golf Club places emphasis on junior golf development, having hosted significant tournaments like the McGregor Trophy and the North of England under 14s Championship. Additionally, the club participates in initiatives such as the Get Into Golf programme, aimed at making golf accessible to a broader audience.

Summer green fees (2025) are £20.00 Wednesday to Friday and £25.00 on Saturday & Sunday. Bookings can be made through the BRS system, with online payment required prior to playing. Failure to pay by the specified date may result in suspension of access.
