Staddon Heights Golf Club

The golf course at Staddon Heights was first played in 1904, originally as a 9-hole layout on land that would encompass RAF Mount Batten. It is noted for its cliff-top location offering expansive views of Plymouth Sound and the city, with a layout that provides varied play to both the north towards Dartmoor and across the city.

By 1946, the course expanded to a full 18 holes set on Staddon Heights, moving from its original site to accommodate public leisure use. No specific designer is mentioned, but the course was shaped by its military origins and the geographic features of the site.

In 1969, civilian members purchased the course from the Ministry of Defence, marking a significant transition to civilian management. This purchase ended the club's formal association with the military and opened the door to increased civilian membership and input.

Changes in 2004 included the construction of two new holes, the 16th and 17th, and the reconfiguration of existing holes to avoid crossing Staddon Lane. The course also saw the integration of the 5th and 6th holes into a new Par 5.

The course's management and design have continued to evolve, with the most recent clubhouse opening in 1985 and the addition of the Centenary Room in 2004. These changes were part of ongoing improvements to both the clubhouse and the course itself.

Today, the course straddles the boundary between Plymouth City and South Hams District, with most of it lying in South Hams. It continues to be an integral part of the local golfing community, with many members coming from the city and its suburbs.
