Stockport Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Cheshire. The club was first formed in 1905.
Stockport Golf Club was established in 1905, with the current 18-hole course largely designed by Sandy Herd, the 1902 Open Champion. The course is situated in a rural woodland area near the border of Derbyshire and Cheshire, and it was officially opened with an exhibition match featuring notable golfers Harry Vardon, James Braid, and John Henry Taylor, as well as Sandy Herd.
In 1929, this course was a venue for an exhibition match between the American Ryder Cup team, including Gene Sarazen and Walter Hagan, and local amateurs, drawing a crowd of six to seven thousand spectators. The golf course has hosted various significant golf events, such as the Open Regional Qualifier and major County Championships, and it was the site where Charl Schwartzel set a new course record of 64 during an Open Qualifier in 2002.
The course has undergone several remodeling efforts throughout its history and has been recognized as one of the top golf layouts in the North of England. Stockport Golf Club’s course is known for having gender-neutral tees and offers different course lengths—the blue course at 6,373 yards, the white course at 6,106 yards, the yellow course at 5,993 yards, and the red course at 5,518 yards—catering to various skill levels.
Notably, this club is home to the prestigious Stockport Salver, part of the Cheshire Cat, which is a World Ranking event. The course prides itself on the quality of its presentation and its facilities, emphasizing an inclusive golfing experience for members and visitors alike by retaining and attracting members with diverse golfing abilities.
