About: Sudbury Golf Club

Sudbury Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Greater London. The club was first formed in 1896.

Sudbury Golf Club was founded in 1896 as Acton Golf Club and relocated to its current site in 1920, necessitated by a compulsory purchase order for housing development post-World War I. The new site, formerly known as Horsenden Farm, was acquired for 18,000, with an additional 6,250 for lease surrender from the landowner Major E.C. Murray.

The course was designed by Harry Colt, a renowned golf course architect, and was constructed by the firm Fowler & Simpson with over 100 men. The rapid development allowed 14 holes to become playable within five weeks, with the inaugural shot taken by Sir Sydney Skinner on April 2, 1920.

The current clubhouse at Sudbury Golf Club was built in 1921, preceding nearby residential development, and remains largely true to its original design. Sir Sydney Martyn Skinner J.P., pivotal in the club's relocation and design, is honoured with the Skinner Match-Play Trophy in recognition of his contributions.

The golf course itself, designed by Harry Colt in 1920, features a par of 70 and boasts a challenging yet playable parkland layout with rolling, tree-lined fairways and pulpit greens. The course offers four par 3s that showcase Colt's skill in designing short holes and provides comprehensive practice facilities.

Consistent enhancements include investment in a new irrigation system to improve the quality of the course, which hosts county major championships and finals. The club also continues to update the clubhouse and ancillary facilities to complement the golfing experience.
