Sutton Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Dublin. The club was first formed in 1890.
Sutton Golf Club, established in 1890, is recognized for being the foundation of a historical narrative in Irish golf, with its early introduction predating its official foundation, facilitated by the convenient rail access from Dublin. The club expanded its golfing premises with the opening of The Golfers Hotel at Sutton Cross in 1897 to accommodate its growing popularity.
Originally encompassing golf and boating, the sport of golf eventually prevailed, leading to a focus predominantly on golfing activities. The course's layout experienced a notable change in the 1970s with the expansion to include part of the course across the railway line, emphasizing the evolution of the course's design and challenges over time.
The golf course has been instrumental in cultivating talented players, with its first members such as Averell Digges La Touche and the Lauder sisters gaining national recognition early in the 20th century. Significant achievements in tournaments and team competitions, including wins in the senior Cups and Barton Shields, punctuated the club's contribution to the sport.
JB Carr, an esteemed member since 1935, marked the commencement of a significant era for Sutton Golf Club with his remarkable international successes. The acquisition of Connors Field allowed for a substantial redesign in 1996, resulting in the current configuration of the course.
Over its history, the club has seen the construction of three clubhouses, with the latest inaugurated in 2001, and it has maintained a significant reputation, partly because of the illustrious golfing achievements associated with its members. The golf course itself provides distinctive challenges and is set in a location recognized for its historical relevance to Irish golf.
