About: Tynemouth Golf Club

Tynemouth Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Northumberland. The club was first formed in 1914.

Tynemouth was originally designed by Willie Park Jr. and was established in August 1914.

During World War I, the club supported its employees who enlisted by allowing them to resume their positions after service, though Matthew Owen, the club's first professional, sadly lost his life in the war. To assist the war effort, the course was used for grazing, which simultaneously brought in revenue and preserved the fairways from being plowed up.

In 1919, efforts began to acquire additional land to transition from a 15-hole course to a full 18-hole course, but it wasn't until 1936 that the club managed to acquire an extra 10-acre field. Scottish golf architect James Braid was commissioned to design an extended course in 1938, but due to legal and war-related delays, the complete 18-hole course did not officially open until March 1952.

The club's original facilities were housed in old farm buildings, but by the mid-1930s, there was a demand for a dedicated clubhouse, which was officially opened in January 1940 but met with immediate wartime restrictions impacting operations. Despite being subjected to blackouts, early closures, and rationing during the war, the clubhouse design has largely remained unchanged, continuing to serve the needs of golfers.

The last significant modification of the golf course occurred in 1957/58 when a further 15-acre field on the north-west boundary was incorporated, leading to the current course layout. Over the past 60 years, the club has made numerous improvements, such as renovating bunkers and planting additional trees, and the greens have recently received considerable attention to maintain their condition.

Green fees for casual visitors are £40 for 18 holes during the summer season (April to September). Visitors playing with a member can play 18 holes for £22. Juniors can play for £18.

Tee times can be booked online via the BRS tee booking system. County Card, James Braid Assoc and NDGP reciprocal tee times must be booked with the Pro Shop on 01912580728 ext 2 or the main office on 01912574578 ext 3. Proof must be provided at time of payment in the Professional Shop.
