Wakefield Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Yorkshire. The club was first formed in 1891.
Wakefield Golf Club was established in 1891, with the original nine holes laid out on Heath Common and play starting on April 2nd, 1892. The Heath Common course was 2610 yards long and had an 18-hole bogey score of 82, with hole lengths varying between 160 and 443 yards.
Following a desire for expansion and to overcome challenges with the common land, in 1910 a new course on land at Woodthorpe, Sandal was proposed and subsequently developed. Alex Herd laid out the course and construction began soon after, while Dr. Alister MacKenzie was commissioned in 1911 to advise on bunkering, leading to an official opening of the course and clubhouse on September 30th, 1911, followed by another grand opening on May 25th, 1912.
Membership grew significantly following the move to Woodthorpe, from 278 members at the opening to 430 by the end of 1912, showing rapid prosperity despite initial financial concerns. During WWI, the landowner's generosity permitted the continuation of golf at Woodthorpe while other lands were used for agriculture, avoiding disruption of the golf course.
The late 1930s saw the end of Heath Golf Club, leading to the acceptance of about one hundred Heath members into Wakefield Golf Club without an entry fee. Plus, in 1942, part of the course was given up for agriculture to aid the war effort while maintaining the ability to play golf.
Notable achievements at Wakefield Golf Club include Alan Slater's sporting successes, representing Yorkshire and England in golf, and his memorial bridge over the fifth fairway. Today, the course is known for its two loops of nine holes, both starting and finishing at the clubhouse, and features true putting surfaces playable throughout the year.
