Walsall Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Staffordshire. The club was first formed in 1907.
The Walsall Golf Club was established on the 25th April 1907 by six local men, securing leases on adjacent farmlands to create the golf course. Initially, the course had six holes which were ready for play in August of the same year, with expansions to fourteen and fifteen holes by 1909.
World War I heavily impacted the golf course, reducing its holes to nine and claiming the lives of many members, including the Club's championship winner of 1910. Dr. Alister Mackenzie was hired in 1920 to redesign the course, which he did, creating a 6,000-yard layout that opened in early May 1921, though it is unclear how much of the course was his original work.
In the 1920s, a proposed Ring Road threatened the existence of the course, leading to complex negotiations which eventually saw the Club receiving 106 acres for a lease at a concessionary rent. Dr. Mackenzie returned in 1928 to design a new course on this land, creating a unique 18-hole course with two circular nine-hole loops that was completed and opened in 1930.
Between 1930 and 1983, the golf course remained substantially as Mackenzie had designed it, though modifications such as bunker renovations and tree planting occured. The course has been played by many professional golfers, including Open winners and renowned amateurs, notably T.W.B. Homer, who won the Amateur Championship as a Walsall member in 1972 and 1974.
The Club faced financial pressures in the late 20th century, leading to efforts to purchase the freehold land on which the course sat. Success came in 1983 when the Club acquired freehold ownership of the land, ensuring the course's continued operation.
Weekday summer 18-hole green fees are £35.00 per person, while weekend summer 18-hole green fees are £40.00 per person.
Winter weekday green fees (excluding Fridays) are £25.00, and winter weekend green fees are £30.00. County card holders can play 18 holes for £30.00.
