The Morning Post on Monday 27 November 1893, noted the opening of Wanstead Park Golf Club, the pre-cursor to the modern day Wanstead Golf Club:

The Wanstead Park Golf Club. — This Club, which was started last August, and now has a membership of 130, of whom 40 are ladies, has acquired a piece of ground at Wanstead Park, which has been laid out as a nine-hole golf links by James Macpherson, formerly of St. Andrews. Under the direction of Mr. Liddon Walters, one of the members, a comfortable clubhouse has been constructed out of a building which originally formed part of the premises connected with old Wanstead House, and the opening of the clubhouse and links took place on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a number of ladies and gentlemen, consisting for the most part of members of the club.
