Welwyn Garden City Golf Club

Welwyn Garden City Golf Course was established in early 1923, after a decision to form a golf club was taken on the 3rd October 1922 by residents of Welwyn Garden City new town. Notable founding figures included Mr D Leitch, Mr S Ogilvie, Mr J Wadland, and Dr R L Reiss, who would become the club's first Captain and President.

The initial course layout was a 9-hole design, extending 2440 yards known as "the old nine," and was played over twice for a full round. The course was extended to an 18-hole setup in 1927, with the layout taking players naturally back to the clubhouse, also referred to as the 19th hole.

During the early years, unique local rules existed, such as using a scythe to clear grass around a ball on the fairway and a limit of 12 golf balls per game. Gender equality was also advanced for the time, with women enjoying the same privileges and handicaps as men, partaking in all competitions.

The course has experienced developments over time, with various changes occurring to its layout as well as to clubhouse facilities. A notable association with the golf course is that of Sir Nick Faldo, a six-time Major winner who has a history with the club.
