West Derby Golf Club

West Derby Golf Club was founded on 10 July 1895, with its first meeting held in the billiard room of New Heys, the Sandfield Park home of Mr. Charles Petrie. The original 9-hole course, designed by founding member H J Chisholm, was opened for play on 29 July 1896 on land leased from Col. Hollinshead Blundell of Deysbrook Hall.

By 1930, the course had expanded to 18 holes, following a series of land acquisitions between 1927 and 1931, including the purchase of the original 50 acres. The new 18-hole course, designed by architects Kirkwood, Medrington & Hassell, was officially opened on 11 April 1931.

Throughout its history, the club's clubhouse has suffered several fires, the most serious occurring shortly after World War I in 1919, leading to the construction of a new clubhouse. This clubhouse, opened in 1930, has since been extended and refurbished over the years.

The course itself has seen significant developments, including a visionary tree planting scheme in the 1960s involving over 4,000 trees of 60 species, which have matured to define the course's parkland setting. West Derby Golf Club has also played a notable role in golfing societies, providing three Society Captains and hosting various golfing events.
