West Lancashire Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Lancashire. The club was first formed in 1873.
The West Lancashire Golf Club was established in 1873 by a group of members from the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. It is recognized as the oldest golf club in Lancashire and one of the oldest in England.
While the initial course architect remains unidentified, the layout from 1874 has seen contributions by notable figures such as Tom Dunn, Harold Hilton, James Braid, and CK Cotton, who designed the course layout that opened in 1961.
West Lancashire Golf Club has been influential in the history of golf, being one of the original clubs to fund The Amateur Championship trophy in 1885. In 2023, the club is slated to celebrate its 150th anniversary.
The modern-style clubhouse, which opened in 1962, was designed by the architectural firm Tripe & Wakeham and features a terrace that provides views over the course and nearby river. The current course was designed by CK Cotton, who is also credited with designing other prestigious courses such as Royal Lytham & St Annes and Ganton.
The course further gained cultural significance with the installation of Antony Gormley's art installation 'Another Place' along the adjacent shoreline in 2005. The club will host the Final Qualifying for The Open Championships from 2023 to 2026.
The West Lancashire Golf Club is also recognized for its place amongst the Top 100 Golf Courses in Great Britain. Its notably challenging opening hole features two deep bunkers and a long green surrounded by slopes.
