Westerhope Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Northumberland. The club was first formed in 1938.
The establishment of Westerhope Golf Course was initiated by a meeting on 1st February 1938 when Newburn Urban District Council decided to create a Municipal golf course. After unsuccessful negotiations with the Duke of Northumberland for land at Chapel House Farm, the Council successfully acquired approximately 105 acres from North Walbottle Coal Company for the golf course.
Golfing professional Sandy Herd, Open Championship winner in 1902, was commissioned to design Westerhope Golf Course, with his original design largely intact to this day. The course construction began under the supervision of Jack Makepeace, appointed in April 1940, though wartime restrictions meant initially only nine holes (modern holes 4 to 12) could be established, formally opening on 21st June 1941.
By 1947, an additional six holes were constructed on land that was previously reserved for agriculture, bringing the total to 15 holes by 1948. The full 18-hole course, as known today, was completed with the opening of holes 14,15, and 16 in 1951.
Westerhope Golf Course is characterized by the integrity of its original layout with distinct features and challenges, such as specific hole designs named like 'Makepeace Trail', 'The Sycamores', and 'Sandy`s Pride'. These elements reflect the strategic demands placed on play and highlight the historical value and evolution of the course over the years.
